ABOUT THE PROGRAM

 TruckeePD_Volunteer-final

The Police Volunteer's are an essential part of the Truckee Police Department. All newly appointed Police Volunteers will receive “ON THE JOB TRAINING”.  New volunteers will be issued uniforms and equipment. Once the training starts, new volunteers will go to work side by side with the Police Officers and Volunteers.

Police Volunteers are at all community events that require a police presence and assist with traffic and crowd control. Their duties also include: Emergency Callout, Traffic Surveys, Handicap Parking Enforcement, Stakeouts, Radar/CMS Trailer Deployment, assisting officers at crime scenes and traffic accidents, assisting with boat patrol on Donner Lake, and Vacation Checks. They assisted the Town's Public Works Department in traffic control during the construction of the Highway 80 and 89 Roundabouts. They also participate in special events, such as, Truckee Thursdays, 4th of July festivities, bicycle rodeos and others.

To date the VIP members have contributed over 27,000 hours since the program started in 2003 and a total of over 3,100 hours in 2015. The estimated cost savings to the Town of Truckee in 2015 is over $84,000.  We presently have 21 dedicated men and women who make up our VIP program. They come on a minute's notice to assist our department in times of emergency.  They often call in when they hear of an emergency and ask how can they help.  The Truckee Police Department is extremely proud of the VIPS program and if you would like more information, please contact our department and see how you can become a Truckee Police Volunteer.
