Patrolling the city are 25 sworn police officers, which sounds like a lot for this small town, until you consider:                                                               

  • The Town of Truckee has a permanent population of 16,000 citizens, and encompasses roughly 33 square miles.
  • Truckee experiences large swells of population increases as the area is tourist-based. At various times of the year, Truckee’s population is estimated to double or triple.
  • The entire city is bisected by a major interstate (I-80)
  • There is an Amtrak and Greyhound station downtown
  • There is a 1000 acre airport that is always busy with private jets
  • There is an interstate river that also bisects the Town of Truckee
  • Donner Lake is the second largest lake in the area (Lake Tahoe)
  • There are seven schools in Truckee including a High School and Community College.
  • There are ski resorts in and around Truckee, most notably Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Boreal, Sugar Bowl, and Tahoe Donner

                                                                                                

Each Truckee Police Officer currently uses  the following equipment:                                                     

  • Chevy Tahoe 4x4 with police package
  • Mobile Data Terminal
  • On Board Digital Video + Audio System
  • Glock sidearm
  • Colt Long Rifle
  • Taser Immobilization Device
  • Pepperball OC Delivery System
  • Officers are supplied with all necessary equipment by the department, including summer and winter boots, snow suits, 5.11 BDUs, gear bags, and anything else needed.

TPD officers are trained to handle any call, and they receive specialized training in various disciplines almost every month. Truckee PD officers have attended specialized schools such as Bike Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Dive Rescue, Defensive Tactics, Active Shooter, Rangemaster, and various other specialties.
