Donner Lake is patrolled using a jetboat on weekends and holidays in the summer. Primary violations enforced are unsafe boating and unsafe towing (waterskis and tubes).
Truckee PD took delivery of our jet boat on 7-24-2003, and it is a 21-foot aluminum-well 425 horsepower 5,000 pound manufactured by Design Concepts. The boat and all of its equipment was purchased through a grant from the California Department of Boating and Waterways. The boat's primary supervisor is Sergeant Jason Litchie, who manages most of the logistics of the boat's operations. Officer Russ Walsh is the assigned boat officer through summer operations. The patrol boat can be found on Donner Lake all summer and during almost any emergency on the water 365 days a year. The patrol boat is also used as a diving platform for TPD's Scuba Dive and Rescue team that operates in tandem with the Truckee Fire Department Dive Team.
Since 2003, Truckee Police and Truckee Fire have had a regional diveteam. The team regularly trains at once a month in local lakes and waterways. Typically, the teams are called upon to recover drowning victims or locate submerged evidence. All team members are rated minimally as Rescue Divers and can perform operations in any water condition to a maximum depth of 100' actual in any of our high-altitude lakes. The diveteam responds to at least one body recovery operation every summer. All of the recent drowning victims in the Truckee area would be alive today if a life-jacket had been used.
TPD's diveteam is equipped with Diving Unlimited International Drysuits and BCDs, Sherwood Blizzard regulators, Bio-Fins, and all necessary equipment. In 2010 the diveteam acquired Ocean Technology Systems (OTS) Guardian full face communication masks. These masks protect our divers' faces from contaminated water and enable clear communications with each other and the surface for miles if necessary. Generous grants from the California Department of Boating and Waterways provide 100% financing for all dive team equipment and maintenance.
The diveteam functions in cooperation with the Truckee Fire Department. In a typical operation, the divers themselves are supported on the surface by stand-by medical teams and logistics.
