The Town of Truckee Animal Services (TOT) and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) remains committed to keeping our community as safe as possible for people and animals alike by continuing our services. After extensive and careful deliberation regarding the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic, HSTT and TOT Animal Services has decided to temporarily close our shelter to the public and volunteers. This decision was made in conjuncture with HSTT, TOT and support of HSTT’s Board of Directors and was not taken lightly. We feel a great responsibility to our employees, volunteers, adopters, shelter pets, and community; therefore, this decision was made with everyone’s best interest in mind. During our closure, many animals will be placed in foster homes and shelter staff will ensure the animals that remain on site will receive the highest level of care, including socialization and exercise. Our stringent cleaning protocols will continue; maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness throughout the shelter.

TOT Animal Services will be reducing in person contact by requiring appointments for animal surrenders and redemptions. You can reach us at 530-582-7830. TOT also asks that the public renew pet licenses by mail or online by going to our website,

We understand the impact of COVID-19 beyond our shelter walls as well. Quarantines, loss of wages and lack of inventory/access to essential items are having huge impacts on our community members and their pets. With that in mind, we will continue to operate our Pet Pantry program providing pet food and supplies to our community members. Additionally, HSTT will continue to facilitate adoptions by appointment.

Hours for Pet Pantry food pick up or scheduled adoption appointments will be Tuesday through Saturday, from 10am until 3pm. To make an appointment for adoption, please call HSTT at 530-587-5948 or email

The shelter’s Pet Pantry program distributes donated pet food items. If you would like to contribute to the Pet Pantry program, items can be dropped off in the designated bin in front of the shelter seven days per week between the hours of 8am-5pm (please do not bring in donations outside of those hours, due to surrounding wildlife). We are only able to accept donations of unopened and unexpired pet food and cat litter. Please do not drop off any other type of physical donation.
