Welcome to the webpage of the Truckee Police Department. The Town of Truckee Police Department was officially formed in June of 2001 in the lineage of the Town’s establishment in 1863 and incorporation in 1993.

The Town of Truckee is uniquely geographically located in the easternmost region of Nevada county and is separated from the County Seat and the remaining two incorporated cities by 53 miles, over 2400 feet in elevation over the historic Donner Pass, and many times by severe winter weather conditions. Truckee is the largest municipality in the county with 34 square miles and a full time population of 16,000.  Interstate 80 transects through the Town limits for nearly 16 miles.

Currently the Police Department has 33 full time employees. The command structure consists of the Police Chief, one Lieutenant, and one Support Services Manager. The Police Department oversees Operations, Support Services, Animal Services, and Parking. Truckee Police Department is known for having a first class facility, the latest in technology, and first class equipment.  The staff is dedicated to carrying out the community policing philosophy to town residents and visitors alike. Staff members serve a large flex population that often doubles on weekends, holidays, and in the summer months.  Half of Truckee’s residential units are maintained as second homes or vacation properties. Truckee’s citizens closely preserve its small town atmosphere while welcoming and hosting national and international visitors and events into the Town’s renowned region for year-round outdoor activities.

Chief Robert Leftwich

I am truly humbled and honored to be the Police Chief for the Town of Truckee.  I am very proud to represent all of the hard working men and women of the Truckee Police Department and the community we serve.

The Truckee Police Department is committed to focusing on Community-Based Policing through collaborating on creative solutions to community issues.  We believe in fostering strong communication and transparency with our community as much of our success is due to the strong partnerships we have formed.  We will continue to bridge communication gaps through social media and encourage direct community involvement with the police department.  We will seek out new opportunities for emerging technology as we move forward as an organization.  We will continuously strive to remain a premiere law enforcement agency and recognize that our community’s trust is perishable and we must work every day to maintain it.  With the many opportunities and challenges that face law enforcement today, I am extremely proud and confident in our ability to adapt and remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the best possible police services for our Town.

Thank you for visiting the Truckee Police Department’s website.  I hope the information you find here will enhance your awareness about who we are and what we do.  We believe that when community members and police officers know each other and trust each other, there is no limit to what can be accomplished together. Please contact me any time. To learn more about me, please read my biography.
