The purpose of the Public Works Department is to provide year-round, all-weather service to our community and to enable our neighbors and guests to enjoy the uniqueness of our area in a safe and enjoyable environment.
The Town of Truckee is approximately 33 square miles in area, with the highest elevation at 7,500 feet. The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 164 miles of streets and roadways. Due to the severe winters in the High Sierra, the streets are in varying conditions. The department is staffed with 20 full-time employees and hires up to 18 additional employees for the snow removal season. The Road Division has over 60 vehicles in stock with an average age of 9.5 years.
The Public Works Department also provides drainage maintenance, street sweeping, striping of public parking stalls and crosswalks, stenciling of streets, and sign maintenance. Of the total 164 centerline miles, the Town has over 100 ditch miles and 15 miles of culvert to maintain. This maintenance includes culvert cleaning, brushing of roadside shrubs and trees, and reestablishing drainage ditches on a continuing basis. Maintenance of driveway culverts is the responsibility of the property owner. For more information on drainage issues, call (530) 582-7707.
The Public Works Department receives hundreds of calls each year from citizens. These calls help the department respond to citizens' needs. Responding to citizen calls and requests is part of the service provided.
