VICE MAYOR GOODWIN ANNOUNCES INTENT TO RESIGN FROM TRUCKEE TOWN COUNCIL IN AUGUST

At the June 11, 2019 Town Council Meeting, Vice Mayor Goodwin announced his intent to resign from the Truckee Town Council sometime in August.  Upon his resignation in August, the Council must either appoint someone to fill the vacated seat, or call an election to fill the seat, within 60 days of the vacancy.

The option to call a special election to allow the public the opportunity to vote on candidates to fill the vacancy would likely place the election on March 3, 2020; the date of California’s presidential primary election.  If an election is held, the winning candidate would serve for the remainder of Vice Mayor Goodwin’s term, which ends in November 2022.

Alternatively, if the Town Council chooses to make an appointment to fill the vacancy, there are no requirements for how the Council goes about selecting an appointee.  The only requirement is that the appointee is a registered voter in the Town of Truckee; thus making them eligible to serve on Town Council.  One approach to appointment would be to take applications, and another would be to appoint the candidate who received the most votes in the last Town Council election without being elected.  If the Council decides to take applications, it may wish to consider having two members of the Town Council work with the Administrative Services Director to screen and interview applicants and bring some recommended number of candidates forward for the entire Council to interview in an open Council meeting.  If the seat is filled by appointment, the appointed Council member would serve until the November 2020 Council election. The seat would be contested in the November 2020 election and the winning candidate would then serve until the November 2022 election.
