| VOLUNTEERS IN POLICING
VIP Mission Statement
Providing
a service and safety partnership between the
community and police department

Volunteer of
the Year
The Truckee VIP is
an essential part of the Truckee Police
Department. All volunteers have to complete
the eleven week
Citizen Academy as the introduction to
the police department. Once they complete
the training they are issued uniforms and
equipment and go to work side by side with
the officers. You see them at all community
events requiring a police presence handling
traffic and crowd controls. In 2005 our
volunteers performed 2,024 hours of service
to your community. They assist officers at
crime scenes, traffic accidents,
participated in boat patrol on Donner Lake
and even assisted the Town's Public Works
Department in traffic control during the
construction of the Highway 80 and 89
Roundabouts. They also participated in
"National Night Out", bicycle rodeos at
Donner Creek Mobile Home Park and Glenshire
School and numerous other activities. You
saw them at the "Tour De Nez" and the 4th of
July festivities. Their duties also include:
Emergency Callout, Traffic Surveys, Handicap
Parking Enforcement, Stakeouts, Radar
Trailer Deployment, and Vacation Patrol. We
presently have 20 dedicated men and women
who make up our VIP program. They come on a
minute's notice to assist our department in
times of emergency. They often call in when
they hear of an emergency and ask how can
they help. We are extremely proud of the VIP
program and if you would like more
information, I encourage you to contact our
department and see how you can be a VIP.
