FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: I've just received a ticket. What do I do now?
A: The court should send you a courtesy notice within three weeks from the issue date stating the fine amount and the deadline for paying the ticket. If you haven't received the courtesy notice within three weeks of receiving your ticket, call the Traffic Court at(530) 582-7835 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday (except holidays).
It is your responsibility to contact the Traffic Court within 21 days of the ticket date if you do not receive a courtesy notice.
Q: I have a "fix-it" ticket for equipment or registration violations. What do I do?
A: Your ticket is
dismissible or correctable only if the officer has checked the "yes" box next to the violation listed on the front of the ticket and if the violation is
dismissible pursuant to vehicle code. To clear your ticket without a court appearance: (1) fix the problem for which you were cited, (2) now that you have corrected the problem, take your ticket to any police department and ask them to "sign off" the ticket, and (3) mail the "signed off" ticket, along with a $10.00 fee to: Nevada County Superior Court, 10075 Levon Ave, Suite 301, Truckee, CA 96161. You may also bring your proof of correction and $10.00 to the Traffic Court at the address listed above.
Q: What about Traffic School?
A: You are eligible for Traffic School if you (1) have not attended Traffic School in the last 18 months, plus one day, from citation date to citation date, (2) your ticket was not alcohol or drug related, (3) you have a valid drivers license and no outstanding failures to appear in a Nevada
County Court or failures to pay a fine,
(4) you are not a commercial driver, and (5)
you do not have a tank or hazmat endorsement. If
you meet all three criteria, you may request
Traffic School by paying the amount of the
ticket and $32.00 court administrative fee
to the Traffic Court. The Traffic School
must be approved by the Nevada County Superior Court. Please note that traffic schools are independent of the Court and will charge you a separate tuition fee. For further information please call our Traffic School automated system at (530) 582-7834.
Q: Can I just pay the ticket by mail and not appear in court?
A: Yes. If your case does not require a mandatory court appearance, you may send the payment indicated on your courtesy notice in full by personal check, cashier's check or money order. Credit cards are not accepted at this time.
Q: Where does my traffic fine go?
A: The money from traffic fines is collected by the court, forwarded to the county, and then divided among various state, county and city agencies according to a complex formula under state law.
