All counties in California are considered "rabies areas". As such, every time an animal bites a person, no matter the circumstances, it must be reported to Animal Services. Depending on the type of bite, the animal may be subject to a ten (10) to fourteen (14) day quarantine period in which the animal will be observed for signs and symptoms of the rabies virus.

Any person who willfully conceals information about the location or ownership of an animal subject to rabies, that has bitten or otherwise exposed a person to rabies, with the intent to prevent the quarantine or isolation of that animal is guilty of a misdemeanor.
