Q: Where do I license my dog and what paperwork is required?
A:
Dog licenses can be purchased at the Animal Services office at Town Hall during the hours of 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. A current rabies vaccination certificate is required from a licensed vet. If your dog is spayed/neutered, it needs to state that on the rabies certificate or we need to see the separate alter certificate.
Q: Is a dog license required in Truckee?
A:
California State law and the Town ordinance require that all dogs be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. There is a 30 day grace period from when the dog turns the age of four (4) months, becoming a Truckee resident, or getting a new dog. A license tag on your dog’s collar is the fastest way to reunite you and your dog. A dog license also shows that you are a responsible dog owner. A rabies tag from the vet is not a dog license.
Q: What are the dog license fees?

Q: What payment methods does Animal Services accept?
A:
Animal Services accepts check and money order payments through the mail. Cash, check, and credit card payments can be made in person at our office. In some circumstances, we can accept credit card payments over the phone. You may call our office at (530) 582-7830 for more details.
Q: How do I know when the dog license expires?
A:
Licenses are valid on a yearly basis or when the rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first. Proof of vaccination may be required to extend a license for the full year. License notices are sent out as a courtesy prior to the expiration date. It is the dog owner’s responsibility to obtain the license before the end of the 30 day grace period or a late penalty will be applied. Be sure to inform our office if you move so we can keep our records updated.
Q: Is there a penalty if I license my dog late?
A:
A $12.00 late penalty will be applied to any dog license that is obtained after the 30 day grace period, whether it is a renewal or new license. Also, failure to license a dog may result in a citation being issued.
Q: How do I get a duplicate dog license tag?
A:
It is important to make sure your dog is wearing the dog license tag. If your dog loses the tag, you can order a duplicate by calling our office. It can take a couple of weeks to have stamped and the cost is $3.00.
Q: Is there a leash law in Truckee?
A:
The only location in Truckee where there is a strict leash law is at Truckee Regional Park between the months of May and October. There is an At Large Prohibited ordinance in Truckee, which means that you must have both immediate voice and visual control over your dog. Dogs roaming the neighborhood would be an At Large Prohibited violation, in which a citation may be issued. When you are walking your dog, we recommend using a leash for both the safety of you and your dog.
Q: What can I do about a pet I can no longer keep?
A:
You may contact our office if you have a pet that you can no longer keep. An appointment, a fee, and a completed pet personality form are required when turning in a pet. After a mandatory holding period, the animal will be assessed and if appropriate, may be placed for adoption with the Humane Society.
Q: How can I adopt a new pet?
A:
All of our adoptable animals are placed in new homes by the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. You may contact the Adoptions Coordinator at (530) 581-3199 or visit their website at http://www.hstt.org for more information.
Q: Is there a low cost spay/neuter program in Truckee?
A:
The Town of Truckee and Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe have joined together by offering a Community Spay/Neuter Program for Truckee residents that meet certain financial guidelines. Spaying/Neutering pets saves lives!! If you have any questions about the program, you may contact the Humane Society at (530) 587-5948.
Q: What should I do if I see a bear?
A:
If a bear is causing property damage or a public safety, you may contact the Truckee Police Department at (530) 550-2320. In certain situations, they will attempt to divert the bear to a different location. The Department of Fish and Game can be contacted at (916) 358-1300 for any additional information or assistance.
Q: How do I handle my raccoon problem?
A:
If you have a raccoon problem, you may contact the Wildlife Shelter at (530) 546-1211 or the Federal Trapper at (530) 273-2648 for assistance.
Q: How do I file a complaint?
A:
All complaints are acquired in confidence. Your information is not given to the person you are filing a complaint against. You will need to provide the type of complaint, an address where the animal lives (if known, very helpful), and your personal information so that we can recontact you if necessary. Complaints that are considered a public nuisance (barking, damage to property, or impeding lawful movement) are required to be submitted in writing.
