Gas Meter Sheds
Gas meters in Truckee must be protected from falling, sliding and accumulating snow. Unless a gas meter is installed in a protected location such as under an engineered deck, a gas meter shed shall be provided. On any new installation or reconnecting the service of an existing installation, the gas meter shall be protected. The Town building inspector will not tag the gas piping installation for a meter set or reconnection unless and until the meter is adequately protected.
There are three options for meter shed design that are presently approved in Truckee. The Town and gas company have two approved engineered designs that can be used anywhere in Truckee. In general, meters shall not be installed on snow shedding sides of buildings. Provided the meter is not installed on the snow shedding side of a building, the approved design without sides or a door may be used. In the event, the gas meter cannot be installed on a non-snow shedding side, the four pier design with walls and a door shall be used. If the meter shed is built to either of these specifications, it will be approved. Alternatively, the Town will consider any other engineered design. for any other engineered design, two sets of plans must be submitted to the Town for approval. Plans must bear the stamp of a California registered engineer or licensed arechitect. The shed shall be designed for 1.4 times the ground snow load.
